THE LARGEST BAKERY IN NORTH AMERICA. When Canada Bread decided to consolidate three of their Ontario facilities into one mega-bakery, we knew the project would be all about the big picture. But even though the scale of the building is impressive, it’s the details – such as the high-efficiency lighting and solar reflective roof – that set this LEED® certified facility apart from the rest. After a little more than a year under construction, the beautiful new 400,000 sf bakery marked a landmark addition to Hamilton, and since its completion in the Fall of 2011, is still heralded as one of the largest bakeries in the NAFTA trading zone.
The primary challenge of the Canada Bread facility was completing such a large scale project in such a short amount of time. The super fast-tracked schedule put a fair amount of pressure on our construction team, but our development team worked hard to alleviate any concerns, fostering relationships at the municipal level in an effort to facilitate the approvals process. From breaking ground to production of saleable product, the construction of this mega-bakery took only 13 months.
Significant changes were made to processes and systems throughout construction, and each change deeply-impacted both the structure and the schedule. As a result, two design phases had to be combined in order to accommodate the evolving scope. Thanks to the efforts of the entire team, the project not only finished on time, but was also one of the first industrial/distribution facilities in Canada to achieve LEED® Silver certification.
